goops:umm no they dont sorry :) or atleast at my church . nice try to prove me wrong though, wikipedia isnt a reliable source
i have to finish up this stupid fossil project its like supposed to go on a poster board or some crap but i’m gonna use a sheet of paper because .. i want to & it makes me feel a little more bad ass than i already am ;D But yeah were starting evolution & i’m not happy about it.. i don’t care if i sound like a prude.. it slowly turns children into atheist making them question god, religion and everything else based on some guys theory i think we should have a choice on whether to be taught this or not with it being such a controversial subject
This is one of the stupidist things I’ve ever heard anyone say. Shame on you for being so incredibly ignorant about science and reality. First off, evolution isn’t just “some guy’s theory” it’s established science. You don’t know the difference between what science refers to as a ‘theory’ and what laymen refer to as a theory, so let me clear it up for you. In science, gravity is ‘just some guy’s theory’ with every bit of evidence as evolution. Science doesn’t state facts, science is a process by which the natural universe can be understood. But as sure as you can say gravity is a fact, you can bet evolution is a fact.
Evolution has no more of an impact on one’s religious beliefs than any other aspect of reality. You think that it challenges people’s faiths based on trumpted up anti-intellectual arguments from conservatives and pathetic Scopes trial holdouts. Millions have found a way to reconcile their faith with the FACT of evolution. Just like millions have reconciled their faith with a round earth, an earth that is billions of years old, no evidence of sudden worldwide floods, an earth that didn’t exist until after the sun, and the existence of outer space.
You claim that studying evolution makes one an atheist, but while you base this on nothing I’m going to go ahead and assume you think that because you accept a literal interpretation of the book of Genesis. This makes you wrong for so many reasons. Billions of people throughout history have dismissed the literal interpretation of Genesis without becoming atheists. And, in addition, I’m not sure if you’re aware of the fact that many religions don’t include biblical texts at all.
Finally, you suggest that because evolution is ‘controveral’ it ought not be taught in school. I guess the same, according to you, would go for slavery, the slaughtering of the indians, the Holocaust and a series of other controversal and unpleasent historical events. You know, every single right you have was, at some point, controversal. But let’s not talk about it? Let’s just talk about nice stuff in school like puppies and flowers (oh wait, those things all evolved.) How about fairy tales about talking snakes and magic fruits?
lindseycamille: i apologize for offending you and i totally see where you are coming from. but i know a lot of people who have turned atheist because of evolution. yeah slavery can be taught in school and the slaughtering of the Indians yes its controversial but there is also well documented proof of it. and it does have an impact if you ask people you cant tell me that if you have a strong religious belief and a well educated person is pretty much telling you otherwise wouldn’t it make you question it? its unnecessary and VERY controversial. i can get by in life without being told i came from a monkey? and yes i know there are a lot of things we learn that aren’t exactly life lessons that we will use in the future but they are not nearly as controversial. As a catholic i’m not supposed to “blend” evolution in.
The Catholic church accepts evolution, albeit an evolution “guided by God” or some such, but still… it’s evolution. Not to mention that evolution is taught in most Catholic schools and is widely accepted by all Catholics otherwise.
Just sayin’.
Wikipedia isn’t a reliable source when you need to be sure of specific dates or facts that people could have easily changed on a highly contested subject. It *is* a reliable source when speaking in general terms of, say, THE CATHOLIC CHURCH’S OPINION ON EVOLUTION. If you don’t trust it go to the links cited in the wiki article and verify them. Now quit fucking whining and do your damn homework. If scientific fact is enough to sway you from your belief, you better do some more research, either into your own faith or into scientific fact.
